Lithic Ski Originals

This is the complete series of the six 72” x 15” original illustrations created for the 2019/2020 Lithic Ski lineup. This series was a labor of love, created while working long hours over three months. The six illustrations are part of a series yet each one is unique and stands alone. I view all my collaborations as an opportunity to try something new and grow as an artist. I approached this project more conceptually and relied heavily on pattern to capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest. To do so, I applied limitations both in terms of the medium and technique. Specifically, I worked almost exclusively with narrow pens and vertical lines. In doing so, I tried to distill down the imagery as much as I could to convey the subtle, delicate feeling of these landscapes. As is the case with most of my work, and especially in this series, I utilize a very laborious technique that helps me achieve a level of obsessions that matches what I feel when traveling in these landscapes. One thing I’ve always appreciated about seeing original art in person is how the layers reveal themselves as you move closer - each piece has an optimum viewing distance yet can be appreciated from multiple vantage points. These originals are definitely best viewed in person where the extensive line-work and layering can be most appreciated. Each piece is individually priced and offers a detailed description - please click on images for closeups.

Description: This piece was created mostly from my imagination but inspired by the deep, glaciated valleys of the Alaska Range. I was less concerned with depicting a specific mountain or valley than I was with capturing the character and feeling of these prodigious landscapes. These larger-than-life landscapes have a scale that’s almost impossible to comprehend - it’s as if the valley glaciers go on and on forever and the granite walls seem endless. I sought to capture this infinite feeling.
